The Economic Report – Art Technologies – A precision metal forming company

April 92010

Greg Gumble: In the ever-changing world of business, an organizations success depends on constantly meeting new challenges and adapting to the marketplace. Im Greg Gumble. From E-Commerce to investing, business strategies to human resources, join me as we take a closer look inside the workings of the modern global economy. Welcome to The Economic Report.

Greg Gumble: Whether its cars, computers, or mobile devices, technology plays an integral part in our everyday lives. Take a look at this next story.

Narrator: Almost twelve million vehicles are produced in America each year, including over four million passenger cars and nearly eight million commercial vehicles. Millions of vital parts and components are needed, mostly supplied by secondary sources. Automobile manufacturers must have confidence that each part will perform reliably for the life of the vehicle. Suppliers who dont maintain peak quality standards part after part dont last long in this business. And the industry itself is in peril if all parties arent bringing their highest level of innovation and efficiency to the table. One company has been providing both for over sixty-five years.

Robb McCoy: Art Technologies has specialized in coining for several decades and weve been very good at learning the aspects of coining and being able to lower our parts cost and improve the quality to give the appearance and the (1:34) tight tolerance of a fine blank part.

Narrator: Opening its doors in 1943 as a tool and die shop, Art Technologies soon began to concentrate on coining and stamping metal parts. In the 1960s, the company created a bearing for automobile jacks that made them easier for the consumer to use. The 1990s saw the coining of precise automobile parts in new ways that resulted in something that was closer to a finished, finely worked product. The new millennium brought more contracts to manufacture more precisely and intricately formed parts in a single step, saving time and cost.

Jim Hammer: There are more and more exacting technologies being implemented in manufacturing in the US. This requires a highly skilled work force. One of those technologies is coining. Here at Art Technologies, we have expertise in coining and that allows us to manufacture parts to the final shapes and dimensions this can oftentimes eliminate costly secondary operations our customers would otherwise require.

Narrator: New methods and technology have allowed parts to be formed into their final shape in the first step, thus eliminating the need for additional machining or grinding. Complex custom stampings, bearings and assemblies have become commonplace. Comprehensive services can include automated inspection, assembly, (3:00) in die assembly, heat-treating, welding, bracing, deburring and plating. Each part is meticulously checked by an automated gauging system. This non-contact process results in quality automotive parts in any quantity with virtually no labor cost.

Jim Hammer: We help our customers right from the initial design stages, designing the part so that it can be made as a coin stamping. We can also work with our customers to help them (3:28) convert a part from existing manufacturing processes to coin stamping. This can dramatically decrease their cost and improve quality. We have twelve presses ranging from forty five to eight hundred tons, eleven assembly machines, four welding machines and a full service tool room to help our customers maintain their competitive advantage.

Narrator: The company serves a vast array of industries, including agriculture, appliance, auto, truck, bus and trailer markets.

Steve Simowitz: We came to Art Technologies because we had a project that was well beyond our in house capabilities, and we wanted a vendor that would give us good competitive pricing and a flexible delivery schedule and Art Technologies fit the bill perfectly. Theyve got the state of the art equipment, good design, good people, and we have been nothing but a happy customer.

Narrator: The company ships over thirteen million bearings annually to clients on four different continents.

Robb McCoy: Stamping in North America is making a bit of a resurgence. Global economic conditions as well as increased transportation cost is making it more appealing to manufacture and stamp heavy metal parts near where theyre going to end up. We see Art Technologies with our skilled labor here in Cincinnati to be a leader in the coin stamping segment of our industry as well as a key metal component supplier to the injection molding industry.
