Tip #21 Getting the Most out of Your Corn Cob Pipe: American vs Chinese Pipes

As proud as I am of America, I’m not blind to the fact that there have been many cases where American businesses have allowed the quality of their product to slide, while continuing to increase the price. When a competitor comes to market with a better product, or a “value engineered” product, the original supplier needs to pick-up their game. Missouri Meerschaum has outlasted dozens of competitors from the USA over their 130+ years in business here in the USA, but Chinese suppliers have one distinct advantage: They are government owned. That means if they have a strategic reason for getting into a market, they can “buy” it by lowering their profits to unsustainable levels, even below cost. Why would they do that? To kill the competition. If Missouri Meerschaum were to succumb to the pressure of cut-rate Chinese imports, leaving only the Chinese to supply our needs, what do you think would happen to the price? What would happen to the quality?

Don’t buy Missouri Meerschaum pipes out of guilt or due to my manipulation; but rather because they are a superior product. I make several other points in the video and would love your comments.

  1. @SmoothShavingCream …
@SmoothShavingCream No, but I’ve heard from people who swear that they have. I’d sure like to see one if anybody thinks they’ve found one.
Your second question is just like asking a wise old owl how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Fortunately the answer is higher, but the world may never know.

    Hey just 2 …
    Hey just 2 questions:
    1. Have you ever ran into a Missouri Meerschaun replica? With the sticker on the bottom and the medico filter inside?
    2. How long does a bowl of Missouri Pride last for?

@cacrow Good point Crow. Besides, we need those college Dissidents from Tienanmen Square to keep their focus on making our tennis shoes.
Sorry, it’s really too sad and serious a subject to joke about; but if I don’t laugh I find myself getting to mad to be productive. Scott

@ahmedsadik1983 I know, it’s tempting. As with so many temptations though, they don’t look so good close-up in the light of the morning!

As Groucho Marx said: “Sincerity – If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”

  9. @grizphoto As for …
@grizphoto As for my packing method, I’ve been fighting the urge to do a video on it because I just don’t feel the need to use as much razzle dazzle as some folks. It’s true that there is a bit of science to it, but some methods shown on Youtube make me snicker. Maybe it’s time…

  10. @grizphoto I love …
@grizphoto I love any sentence that begins with “I totally agree Scott”! Makes a boy feel good, Chris. Yes, there is a bit more dottle when smoking a cob, which is one of the reasons why some folks use pipe mud and why I just leave the dottle in the pipe.

I tend to smoke ribbon cut blends, though I many blends are, well, and blend. I just don’t care for tobacco that’s too flakey.

  11. @PipeProxy Thanks …
@PipeProxy Thanks PipeProxy. Hey, I have been satisfied by the value of a few Chinese hand tools, so I can’t fault ya for giving them a try. Can’t beat a MM though.

  12. the bottom are week …
the bottom are week also i will never buy a China pipe again

  13. I totally agree …
I totally agree Scott! I’ve purchased four Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob pipes…I really like the Diplomat…large bowl and wood bottoms. I have a question for ya Scott, what tobacco do you prefer (cut or style) and how do you pack your pipes. I get a fair smoke out of my pipes…but seem to have a bit of tobac in bottom that doesn’t get burned…any suggestions? Thanks for the videos and info…. Chris

  14. I did purchase one …
I did purchase one of the Chinese corn cobs at a smoke shop and the thing fell apart after the first smoke. While I was cleaning the dottle out my tool just popped through the bottom. I now have 6 MM pipes, never any problems and sweet smokes. Thanks for another great informative video.

    yeah, all chines …
yeah, all chines stuff has poor quality.
Thats what kind of poor quality control that comes out of “slave work”
yes i know that they are not actually slaves, but thats just how it is in their communist government.

if your hearts not in your work, you cannot produce good quality products. ( But you sure can make a massive amount of garbage)

    i wish them better.

  19. Another important …
Another important reason to buy the MM pipes over the Chinese knock-offs is we know what kind of working conditions the MM pipes were made under, and they were almost certainly better than those at a Chinese factory.

    Cheers,
    Crow

  20. Good looking out …
Good looking out Scott you hit a home run on this my friend.
